about:neighbourliness:listening across
Can sound and situated listening help to engage more closely with our neighbourhood?
The sites of our habitat, and the environments that surround our everyday lives form an unassuming acoustic common by means of co-sounding and co-listening to nurture an inclusive social fabric. This collective audiovisual contribution to the X_ARTS Festival 2023 emerged from a workshop organised by Anna Laederach at HyperWerk IXDM HGK Basel, led by Budhaditya Chattopadhyay. The workshop was aimed at investigating listening as a creative and critical practice, one that can assist in fostering greater relationality and mutuality, as well as co-habiting and co-creation. Emphasising the potentiality of listening as a relational act, the workshop invited participants to join for a sonic practice-led investigation of the Dreispitz area where we explored, listened to, and attuned ourselves with this neighbourhood to develop four autonomous sound/audio-visual works for the festival based on situated groupworks.

group 1:the sound of material in dreispitz neighbourhood
by Camila Chebez, Erik Aardema, Zhixian Zhang, Adele Villiger, Georg Mattli and Michele Giannini
At the fieldwork of Dreispitz we collected various silent materials of post existence, we want to evoke the nostalgia of those objects with the sound within their existence. Therefore we made a combination of the image and the sound of these objects, which is meant to remind our audience of the co-living materials.
*And also we are inviting the audience to spread those sounds material to Dreispitz and its neighbourhood, in order to make a reminder of post existence.*

group 2:how to become a neighbour / listening practice 1.0
by Liljana Susuri and Jisoo Lim
16:10 min performance
As an act of mediation necessary in a place to make it a neighborhood, this performance is based on active listening and the creation of sound based on the environment. The process is divided into two phases, where first an interaction with the objects found in the environment forms an audio-initiative. In the second phase, where the protagonists are facing the outside, they respond to what and who is visible by adding another layer of sound. In this way, an ongoing conversation is created that includes initiation, response, reaction and creation.

Are these cameras listening? Welcome to a public-private neighbourhood.
Noisy and raw. Noise is comfort. Noise is disturbance. The sound of surveillance is silence.
